Opportunities for Community Involvement


3.1 Bereavement Support Group

Purpose/Responsibilities:

Individuals joining this group do so in the hope of working through the pain and loss of a loved one. Participants pray briefly with one another, receive a short input at the beginning of each meeting and spend the majority of their time together sharing their experiences.

In order to participate, each person must agree to hold everything shared in confidence and respect the experience of others.

How to Participate: When the start of a new Bereavement Group is announced in the bulletin, contact the parish office and inform us of your interest in participating.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: We meet an hour once a week for ten weeks.

3.2 Catholic Daughters of America

Purpose/Responsibilities:

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas strives to embrace the principle of faith working through love in the promotion of justice, equality, and the advancement of human rights and human dignity for all.

The Catholic Daughters of the Americas complete selected projects that assist in working with the Church and the community to promote good works by reaching out and making a difference in the lives of those who are suffering.

Activites:

Some of the activities in which this organization is involved include support for Bridge Over Troubled Water, support for the archdiocese’ pro-life endeavors, informing membership of topics that coincide with The Catholic Daughters of the Americas’ mission statement by sponsoring speakers, etc.

Collect Pennies for the Unborn

Training/Requirements: Workshop for Officers Training
Need: New members are needed in order to ensure the continuance of a vital organization in the future.
How to Participate: Simply come to a meeting to find out more or call the contact person.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: The Catholic Daughters of the Americas meets once a month. Currently the group meets on either the second or third Wednesday of the month at 12:00 noon in the lower church. Notices are placed in the church bulletin the week before a meeting and the week of the meeting.

3.3 Coffee Social Hosting Group

Purpose/Responsibilities:

Promotion of the coffee social after the Sunday 9:00 Mass is directed at building community among parish members. Individuals or organizations host the social on a rotating/volunteer basis.
Responsibilities include: setting up, cleaning up and providing the baked goods that are served. The parish provides coffee, tea, sugar, paper goods and juice.

Activites: N.A.
Training/Requirements: No training required. An outline of responsibilities is Posted in the kitchen.
Need: Minimally, one person a week from September through the end of June is needed. Some prefer to work in two’s.
How to Participate: Sign up on the sheet left on the serving table in the lower church, speak to Sister Kathleen or call Claire Collins in the rectory.

3.4 Hospitality Baking Ministry

Purpose/Responsibilities: The heart of the ministry of Christian hospitality is the service of one for another. In no other ministry is this truer than in the baking ministry. It is a generous sharing of your time and talent. This table ministry speaks volumes as to what our parish is all about. As the commercial says, "Nothin’ is as lovin’ as somethin’ from the over."

Activites: N.A.
Training/Requirements: The only "requirement" is that what you prepare should taste good!
Need: We can never have too many people in this ministry. The more we have, the less frequently we have to call upon each person.
How to Participate: Speak with Mary Cieslik.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: When called to bake and you are able say, "Yes." If unable, let us know that too. You will be called the next time.

3.5 Prayer Shawl Ministry

Purpose/Responsibilities:

At home alone or in a “sewing circle”, parishioners knit shawls for distribution to those whom are in need of the prayers of the community. As the knitters/crocheters are work, they pray for the person who will receive the shawl, e.g. persons who are ill, women who are experiencing a difficult pregnancy, those who are grieving, those who are separated from loved ones, and the homebound.

Activites: The knitters who engage in this ministry gather to work on their shawls, enjoy some refreshments and conversation twice a month (September to June).
Training/Requirements: The only requirement is the ability to knit or crochet or the willingness to learn. Knitters usually supply their own equipment: needles and yarn.
Need: The more who participate, the merrier.
How to Participate: Speak to Grace Taylor or simply come on the first and third Wednesdays at 10 A.M. in the lower church.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: Work at your own pace at home and/or come to the group work session. Help is available there for problems or finishing edges.

3.6 Pro-Life Committee

Purpose/Responsibilities:

To provide women and men of the parish with an opportunity to attain true love of God through prayer, charity and zeal for souls. The members hope to lead others to Christ in genuine Catholic devotion in their daily lives and promote greater respect for the sanctity of all human life from birth to natural death.

Activites: Disseminate information through the Sunday Bulletin

Information on the Project Rachel Groups (for women who have had an abortion) is provided through the bulletin throughout the year

Every other year, a “Spiritual Adoption” program of nine months of prayer, education, and outreach will be submitted to the Bulletin. At its conclusion, a Parish Baby Shower will be held for Pregnancy Help.

Participate in the Pro-life walk
Training/Requirements: Each month the Archdiocese of Boston Pro-Life Office sends the Pro-Life Representative an update of the events being held by the different Pro-Life groups, for instance – March for Life in Washington, D.C., Project Rachel, Pregnancy Help, Mass of Remembrance for Pre-born Children, information on embryonic stem cells and human cloning.
Need: N.A.
How to Participate: Join Right to Life – Waltham, Watertown, Belmont Chapter - Write to State and Federal Senators and Representatives when bills are introduced which are not pro-life. Let them know you disagree and request a reply.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: No meetings are scheduled within the Parish. Flyers and information regarding these pro-life subjects are available.

3.7 Saint Vincent de Paul Society

Purpose/Responsibilities:

This society assists the needy of the parish and the community through the provision of food vouchers, monthly food baskets, utility and rent assistance and vouchers for filling prescriptions.

Activites: Introductory visit with recipient of goods/services
Two annual clothing drives
Thanksgiving food baskets
Christmas food baskets
Monthly food baskets
Distribute and collect food items
Fund raising
Training/Requirements: Annual CORI check Virtus Training (one three hour session)
Need: New members are always welcome.
How to Participate: Speak with John Morrison or simply attend a monthly meeting.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: Once a month meeting on third Monday of month at 1:00 p.m. in the lower church. Helping on the weekends of the clothing drive

3.8 Social Events Planning Committee

Purpose/Responsibilities:

This committee serves as an umbrella committee planning a calendar of 6-8 events for the year. Each member is responsible for chairing one of those events during the year and cultivating a diversity of people who will share the responsibility of planning and carrying out one of the events. At the end of the year, this committee evaluates the past year.

Activites: Vary year to year
Training/Requirements: Annual CORI check Virtus Training
Need: A committee of six to eight people would be ideal.
How to Participate: Speak with Deanna Witter or Sister Kathleen
Meeting/Serving Commitments:

The Committee meets about four times a year, often after the 9:00 a.m. Sunday Mass.

Additional meeting may be needed for the event you coordinate depending on the nature of the event.

3.9 Sodality

Purpose/Responsibilities:

Members hope to lead others to Christ in genuine:

Dedication to Mary, the Mother of God, through the praying of the rosary and consecrating themselves to Mary, Queen, Patroness and Advocate.

Catholic devotion in their daily lives and promote a greater respect for the sanctity of all human life from birth to natural death.

Praying for deceased members; praying for unity; praying for respect for life.

Activites:

In addition to gathering for prayer, the Sodality enjoys a guest speaker several times during the year, has a Christmas and end of year banquet.

Training/Requirements: N. A.
Need: New members are always welcome and essential to the ongoing vitality of the Sodality.
How to Participate: Simply attend a meeting or contact Catherine Luvisi.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: The Sodality meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month from September through May at 7:00 p.m. Notices about meetings are posted each month in the Sunday Bulletin.

3.10 Transportation Ministry

Purpose/Responsibilities:

To provide transportation to/from weekend Masses for parishioners who would be unable to attend Mass. Transportation is offered by volunteer drivers on a regular/occasional basis.

Activites: N. A.
Training/Requirements: Valid Driver’s license

"optional coverage for bodily injury" on auto insurance policy
Need: Twelve –fourteen persons
How to Participate: Call the contact person.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: We do not meet on a regular basis. Most communication is done via telephone and e-mail.

3.11 Moms and Tots Group

Purpose/Responsibilities:

This group gathers for the sole purpose of having an opportunity for some peer interaction (for children and for moms.) There is no formal agenda at the gatherings. It simply provides mothers with an opportunity to get to know other mothers.

Activites:

Children play with one another under parent supervision and mothers enjoy conversation with one another. Mothers take turns bringing simple snacks.

Training/Requirements: Annual CORI check
Virtus training
Need: There is no limit to the number that can participate.
How to Participate: Simply come any time. Share your telephone number and e-mail address with the group so changes in meeting place and time is communicated to you.
Meeting/Serving Commitments: Weekly on Thursday from 10:00-Noon in the lower church. In good weather, the group gathers at PQ Park (behind the new CVS on Trapelo Road).
